Dosa

Dosa Recipe

Dosa is a traditional and ever-popular South Indian breakfast dish made from a fermented rice and urad dal (black gram) batter. It’s spread thin on a hot griddle, creating a golden, savory, crispy crepe. Typically served with Coconut Chutney and Sambar, it's a wholesome and flavorful start to your day.

Ingredients

• 3/4 cup Parboiled Rice (idli-dosa rice)
• 3/4 cup Regular Rice
• 1/2 cup Whole Urad Dal (or split urad dal)
• 1/4 tsp Fenugreek Seeds
• 1/2 tbsp Chana Dal (optional)
• Water as needed
• Salt to taste
• Oil for frying

Making Process

  1. Rinse and soak both types of rice together for 4–5 hours.
  2. Rinse urad dal, chana dal, and methi together and soak for 4–5 hours.
  3. Grind soaked dals with water until smooth and fluffy. Transfer to a container.
  4. Grind rice until smooth. Mix with dal batter. Add salt and let ferment for 8–10 hours.
  5. After fermentation, stir the batter and adjust consistency with water if too thick.
  6. Heat a tawa, grease with oil, and pour a ladle of batter. Spread in circular motion.
  7. Drizzle oil on edges. Cook until golden brown. Flip if necessary.
  8. Serve hot with chutney and sambar!
