Idli

Idli Recipe

Idli is a soft, steamed, and fluffy South Indian delicacy made from fermented rice and urad dal (black gram) batter. It is a staple breakfast in many Indian households and is known for its health benefits and light texture.

Ingredients

• 1 cup Urad Dal (black gram)
• 2 cups Parboiled Rice
• 1/4 tsp Fenugreek Seeds
• Salt to taste
• Water as needed
• Oil for greasing idli molds

Making Process

  1. Rinse urad dal and fenugreek seeds. Soak them together in water for 4–6 hours.
  2. Rinse and soak rice separately for the same duration.
  3. Grind the urad dal to a smooth and fluffy batter using little water. Transfer to a large bowl.
  4. Grind the rice to a slightly coarse batter and mix both together.
  5. Add salt and mix well. Cover and allow it to ferment overnight (8–12 hours).
  6. Once fermented, gently mix the batter.
  7. Grease idli molds, pour batter into them and steam for 10–12 minutes.
  8. Let them cool slightly, then remove with a spoon. Serve hot with chutney.
