Ven Pongal Recipe


Ven Pongal is a savory South Indian rice and moong dal dish flavored with black pepper, cumin, ginger, and ghee. It is a comfort food often served for breakfast with coconut chutney and sambar.

Ingredients


- 1 cup Raw Rice
- 1/4 cup Yellow Moong Dal
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 2.5 to 3 cups Water
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp Ghee
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1 tsp Black Pepper (whole or crushed)
- 1-inch Ginger (finely chopped)
- 10–12 Cashew Nuts
- A few Curry Leaves

How to Make Ven Pongal


  1. Dry roast moong dal until slightly golden. Wash rice and dal together.
  2. Pressure cook rice and dal with turmeric, salt, and water for 4–5 whistles or until soft.
  3. Once pressure releases, mash the cooked mixture to a soft consistency.
  4. Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds, black pepper, ginger, and cashews. Fry until golden.
  5. Add curry leaves and sauté for a few seconds.
  6. Pour this tempering over the cooked pongal and mix well.
  7. Serve hot with coconut chutney or sambar.
